Its design is inspired by the microphones M 49 and M 50 - the legendary '50s models Naturally the TLM 49 has the typical Neumann finish, matt nickel. His sound personality is also aligned to that of the U 49 and M 47.
Combining a retro look and a proven technology output circuit without audio transformer, Neumann specialty, this microphone ensures clean noise level very low, which allows the use of high gain values.
Applications
Throughout the development phase of this microphone, sound personality has been refined over extensive testing of practice - to optimize the TLM 49 for recording and singing voice. However, it is also ideal for making applications of its instruments and professional studio in the demanding home studios.
Directivity
The capsule of the TLM 49, a specific construction, has a cardioid, cardioid tending towards. As M 49, this microphone is more directive in the treble. The capsule diameter is 34 mm.
The front of the microphone is indicated by the red Neumann logo on the body of the microphone. The capsule is oriented so as to face the sound source when the microphone is held upright (side effects).
Acoustic characteristics
The TLM 49 uses the famous K 47 capsule, which was also used in the M 49 and U 47. His response curve is linear down to the midrange; beyond 2 kHz, it has a slight bump presence, peaking at 3 dB.
The capsule is protected by a screen of generous dimensions, a large acoustic aperture, thus impeccable sound neutrality.
Electrical Characteristics
The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone" (transformerless microphone). TLM technology in fact replaces the usual output transformer by an electronic circuit.
As traditional transformers, this circuit provides an effective common mode rejection, and prevents RF interference that may influence the balanced audio signal.
The background signals that can arise on the symmetrical line of signal transmission are therefore effectively suppressed. The microphone supports undistorted sound pressure levels up to 114 dB, and provides a dynamic range of 102 dB (A-weighted).
Reliability and operating safety
The whole internal structure is mounted elastically, to prevent the transmission of structure-borne noise by means. Moreover, the capsule is mounted on a rubber shock mount.
With its extended frequency response, the TLM 49 can also transmit extremely low frequency signals without coloration. Of course, this means that the microphone is also sensitive to noise located in the register, such as vibration and wind noise. Therefore, the TLM 49 is supplied with the elastic suspension EA 3, which effectively protects the microphone of the structure-borne vibration. If the microphone is used in extreme proximity, you can use a pop screen PS 15 or PS 20, in front of the microphone to provide protection against plosives.
