It is also designed to convert unbalanced signals into balanced ones. Most of this hum (60Hz in the USA and 50Hz in most other countries) is caused by ground loops as electricity uses different paths to get to earth. These ground loops act like radio antennas capturing the hum and noise. The HM-2 completely eliminates this by breaking the earth loop.
