The Portaflex series has its roots in the legendary Ampeg B-15 combo amp, introduced in 1960. Invented by Jess Oliver, the B-15 was revolutionary thanks to its 'flip-top' design, allowing the amp head to be stored inside the cabinet for easy transport and component protection. This innovation quickly made the B-15 a studio standard and a much sought-after amp among bassists of the day, such as James Jamerson and Chuck Rainey.
