Sound Processing System

At the heart of an FM transmission site, the Tiger E3 combines several functions that are usually spread across different pieces of equipment: MPX stereo generation, RDS encoding, source change management, audio limiting and MPX signal control. Its digital architecture also enables it to receive analogue, AES3, IP and MPX sources, with a backup SD card player to maintain the programme in the event of a failure of the main sources.

Axel Technology’s Tiger E3 has been developed to combine, in a single unit, the functions required for the processing and security of an FM transmission site. Its architecture combines an MPX stereo generator, an RDS encoder, an automatic audio source switching system, a limiter, an MPX changeover unit and various measurement and monitoring tools. This approach reduces the number of devices required in the signal chain whilst maintaining precise control over the transmitted signals.

Source management is one of its key strengths. The Tiger E3 accepts one analogue input, one AES3 digital input, two IP audio streams and auxiliary MPX sources. Its four-channel audio changeover applies priority and fallback logic, whilst the integrated microSD card player can automatically take over when external sources become unavailable. Configurable delays also allow multiple sources to be synchronised before processing or switching.

On the FM signal side, the Tiger E3 handles stereo composite generation, MPX processing and RDS management. Two independent MPX outputs can be configured with their own source and level, whilst the auxiliary inputs accept MPX, RDS or SCA signals. The MPX changeover also features UECP filtering, allowing certain RDS elements present in an incoming signal to be retained, replaced or removed. A built-in audio limiter, ITU BS.412-compliant power control, and various measurement functions dedicated to MPX, pilot and RDS round off this section.

Monitoring is carried out via a web interface accessible on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Input and output levels, internal signals, RDS data and the MPX spectrum can be monitored via this interface. An FM tuner option adds functions for monitoring the received signal, including RF measurements, MPX deviation, pilot and RDS, as well as decoding of the main RDS services.
