John Lennon, born in 1940, was much more than the co-founder of The Beatles. A deeply creative and complex artist, he used his fame as a platform for peace, notably with his iconic song "Imagine". His pacifist activism, often carried out with his wife Yoko Ono (such as "Bed-in for Peace"), shone a spotlight on the Vietnam War. A contradictory personality, he could be both cruel and generous. His brutal murder in New York in 1980 by an unbalanced fan shocked the world, forever transforming the musician into an immortal icon, a symbol of the broken dream of peace.
