Mick Thomson (born 3 November 1973 in Des Moines, Iowa) first cut his teeth in local death metal - he played in the band Body Pit with Paul Gray before the formation of Slipknot.
During the recording of the first Slipknot album (1999), Thomson did write some guitar solos, but they were cut by producer Ross Robinson and drummer Joey Jordison, who thought they sounded too much like the classic metal formulas of the time.
He greatly admires IRON MAIDEN, TESTAMENT, as well as death metal bands like EXODUS and Morbid Angel, which influenced his mix of down-tuned riffs and extreme elements.
