When Slipknot were preparing the album Iowa (2001), Mick Thomson was one of the few members who insisted on rehearsing in underground environments (car parks, garages) in order to capture a "natural", acoustically unmitigated aggression. His guitar of choice is a signature Ibanez MTM, but he frequently tests 'prototype' models in his own studio, modifying pickups and woods as required for sharper tones. On stage, he is known for his "two-guitar riff": he coordinates his parts closely with Jim Root so that their positions on stage and their synchronisation create an almost choreographed visual impression (posture, movements) while retaining the musical brutality.
