Jimi Hendrix, born in Seattle in 1942, is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Self-taught, he revolutionised electric guitar playing with his innovative use of effects (wah-wah, distortion, feedback) and his unique expressiveness. In just four years of international career, he has made history with cult albums such as Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland. His incendiary performance at Woodstock in 1969, where he covered the American anthem, remains legendary. Hendrix died in London at the age of 27, leaving an indelible mark on rock, blues and popular culture around the world.
