Founder of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he released a string of cult albums including Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. He revolutionised sound with his innovative use of distortion, feedback and wah-wah, influencing whole generations of musicians.
His eccentric look, patterned shirts, military jackets and bandanas became emblematic of the 60s counterculture. His stage charisma, spellbinding improvisations and legendary performances, such as at Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival, have left their mark on rock history.
