Jimi Hendrix composed "The Star-Spangled Banner", revisited at Woodstock as a symbol of protest. He liked to experiment with rare effects pedals, pioneering the psychedelic sound. His first band was called The Velvetones. He influenced a wide range of artists, from rock to jazz. Hendrix suffered from insomnia and sometimes took sleeping pills. He also played sitar and piano. His birth name was Johnny Allen Hendrix, later changed to James Marshall Hendrix.
