Born Johnny Allen Hendrix, he was renamed James Marshall Hendrix at the age of 4. A quiet child, he made his first "guitars" with a broom. Self-taught, he didn't read music and played mainly by ear. Influenced by Muddy Waters and Curtis Mayfield, he developed a unique approach to rhythm and melody. He often recorded in the studio in the middle of the night, searching for new sounds. In 1969, he became the world's highest-paid recording artist. Despite his short career, he left over 130 previously unreleased recordings published after his death. He dreamt of an album with Miles Davis.
