Carlos Santana is a major guitarist who has left his mark on rock history by blending blues, rock and Latin American rhythms. Born in Mexico, he started out as a violinist before turning to the guitar, influenced by traditional music and jazz. His band, Santana, exploded at Woodstock in 1969 with feverish performances driven by Afro-Latin percussion. Santana is also known for his highly vocal, almost singing playing, often using prolonged sustain and simple but powerful phrasing. He has practised meditation since the 1970s, a discipline that influences his spiritual approach to music.
