During automatic calibration with a microphone, many people equipped with Focal floorstanding speakers or Focal compact speakers with an inverted dome tweeter find that the amplifier considers these speakers to be out of phase.
This very common problem is well known to the manufacturers of home cinema loudspeakers and amplifiers. It is mainly due to the fact that the home cinema amplifier's autocalibration program does not take into account the way the speaker crossover has been designed, nor does it know where the home cinema speakers are precisely located in the listening room.
Focal points out that all its loudspeakers are designed and optimised to obtain the best performance, both in hi-fi and home cinema applications. To obtain optimum results, the phase of the midrange and treble registers is optimised between all Focal loudspeakers, given that this is the frequency range in which the sound information to which the human ear is most sensitive is found.
Focal recommendations for correct calibration
To obtain a correct measurement during the autocalibration of a Focal home cinema speaker pack when the amplifier considers that the phase of the speakers is incorrect, the French manufacturer recommends temporarily reversing the polarity of the speakers concerned, for the duration of the measurement.
First step - Reverse the phase of the speakers by reversing the polarity of their respective cables:
1/ Connect the + cable to the - connector on the terminal block
2/ Connect the - conductor cable to the + connector on the terminal block.
Second step - Perform the automatic calibration measurement.
Third step - When calibration is complete, reconnect the speaker cables in the original direction:
1/ Connect the + conductor cable to the + connector on the terminal block.
2/ Connect the - conductor cable to the - connector on the terminal block
Notes
The automatic calibration of speakers by microphone performed by a home cinema amplifier should be considered as an aid or a first approach to calibration, but it cannot be considered as always perfect and 100% reliable.
It is therefore advisable to check the settings obtained by ear, and it may sometimes be necessary to adjust levels and distances. It is also important to check the bass crossover frequencies set by the automatic calibration, as well as the type of speaker assigned to each channel (small/large). Finally, it is advisable to check and adjust the volume of the subwoofer and centre speaker if necessary.
