To find out more...
Gibson did not carve out its place in the history of the American guitar by chance. In 1894, Orville Gibson began by designing mandolins with carved tops, before the brand played a part in the rise of flat-top acoustic guitars from the 1920s onwards. From the L-1 to the J-45, its instruments have since accompanied several generations of artists. This continuity continues to fuel guitarists’ loyalty to Gibson.
- The heat-treated Sitka spruce top draws on an approach inspired by traditional timbers, with the ageing process accelerated by heat treatment.
- The scalloped Advanced X bracing is inspired by the acoustic techniques developed by Gibson in the 1930s.
- The rosewood back and sides provide a rich tonal foundation, in keeping with the square-shouldered Dreadnought body style.
- The composite dovetail joint is filled with heated hide glue, a method preserved in Gibson’s acoustic instrument-making workshop in Bozeman.
