Launched in 1942, the Southern Jumbo was, at the time, the more luxurious version of the J-45, featuring more ornamentation and the famous parallelogram-shaped mother-of-pearl inlays. Gibson kept it in its catalogue until 1978, before releasing several reissues. Its round-shouldered body shape characterised its early decades, before its silhouette evolved in 1962. The current version draws on this heritage with a construction inspired by the original Southern Jumbos.
