The Studio Stage 20/40 Combo 2x12 Purpleblack 150 takes the spirit of classic Hiwatt amps and makes it more accessible for everyday use. With its switchable power from 40 to 20 watts, it's easy to adapt: loud enough for a stage, but also softer for rehearsals or working at home. This flexibility gives musicians the chance to enjoy the Hiwatt sound without being limited by volume.
Under the bonnet is an all-tube architecture with 3 x 12AX7s and 1 x 12AT7 in the preamp, followed by 4 x EL84s at the output. This configuration produces clear, articulate cleans, but also leaves room for natural saturation when the gain is turned up. The boost is controlled by foot or via the push/pull potentiometer, and the True-Spring reverb adds depth without muddying the signal.
One of the key elements of this combo is its two 12-inch Fane Acoustics™ Purpleback drivers, specially designed for Hiwatt. With a capacity of 150 watts each, they ensure an impressive reserve of dynamics and preserve the precision of the sound even at high volume. Their bespoke design recaptures the projection and sonic colour that have been part of the Hiwatt identity for decades, whether in brilliant cleans or thick saturations.

To find out more...
Dave Reeves was a British engineer and the founder of Hiwatt, a famous brand of amplifiers for guitar and bass. After working for Sound City and Mullard, in the 1960s he created his own models, designed to be robust, reliable and deliver a clear sound even at high volume. His amps quickly won over legendary bands such as The Who, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, helping to define rock's famous "British sound". Although he died in 1981, his influence lives on and Hiwatt amplifiers are still built according to his principles.
