What is a cartridge?
It is an electromechanical assembly composed of a moving part (the stylus and cantilever assembly) and a fixed part (the pole pieces). There are
two operating principles: moving magnet cartridges and moving coil cartridges. In the latter, unlike the moving magnet principle, it is the
cantilever that carries a tiny coil that oscillates according to the groove between the
magnets, giving rise to the audio signal. The vast majority of cartridges used
by professionals (DJs in particular) are of the “moving magnet” type because
they offer greater robustness and allow easy replacement of the diamond. Moving coil cartridges are
especially popular with audiophiles because they offer superior response
linearity and an extremely low distortion rate.
Why different diamond profiles?
The theoretical profile of the stylus must be as close as possible to that of the engraving chisel in order to follow the groove in exactly the same way. This is impossible because this type of stylus would leave a vinyl chip behind it...
So the stylus was given an elliptical profile that is close to the shape of the engraving chisel. The “Fine Line” profile, developed by Ortofon, further increases this similarity. An elliptical or Fine Line profile allows: better tracking of the finest undulations of the groove (corresponding to the finest sound details), a reduction in the pinching effect. Their larger contact surface ensures both better reading and less wear on the groove sides: the pressure per cm2 is lower with an elliptical or Fine Line stylus than with a spherical stylus.
In summary: A spherical stylus is particularly suited to Scratching. An elliptical tip will prove to be universal, suitable for both scratching and playing musical tracks.
The Fine Line tip and other sophisticated profiles are reserved for HiFi use.
