Ribbon Microphone
Royer Labs R-122 MKII MP, matched pair of ribbon microphones. The Royer R-122 MKII MP is a phantom-powered ribbon microphone for studio and live applications. The mic sounds warm and transparent, round in the treble and unobtrusive. The R-122 MKII is 13 dB more sensitive than its predecessor and also offers a faster transient response, resulting in more open high-frequency imaging. Like the R-121, it is suitable for applications with high sound pressure levels.

The Royer Labs R-122 MKII is a compact, phantom-powered, monaural ribbon microphone. Similar to the Royer R-121, the R-122 MKII has a flat frequency response and well-balanced panning, but is 13dB more sensitive, has a faster transient response and its electronics provide optimum ribbon loading. Like the R-121, the R-122 MKII's ability to withstand high sound pressure levels makes it ideal for applications previously considered impossible for ribbon microphones.
The R-122 MKII is as sensitive as condenser microphones, allowing you to use virtually any microphone or audio interface preamp (even those with nominal characteristics). Conventional ribbon microphones are, on average, 15 to 20 dB less sensitive than condenser microphones, requiring the use of high-quality, high-gain preamps for recording softer sound sources such as acoustic instruments, vocals and room ambience.
The R-122 MKII contains a fully balanced, discrete head amp system using ultra-low noise field effect transistors. Plug an R-122 MKII into any preamp with medium gain characteristics and you'll still get full Royer performance, no matter how quiet the sound source, and you'll have enough gain to drive any recording medium.
The electronics of the R-122 MKII provide a perfect ribbon load, meaning that the R-122 MKII is able to deliver 100% of its sonic potential regardless of the input characteristics of the next microphone. Thanks to the low impedance output, Royer's active ribbon microphones can also be used with extremely long cable lengths with minimal signal loss.
A good impedance match is essential with ribbon microphones, otherwise you will 'load' your ribbon incorrectly, resulting in loss of bass, reduced body, decreased sensitivity and compromised overall performance. With the R-122 MKII, the ribbon receives optimum impedance at all times, whatever your equipment, so its performance will never be compromised by the effects of improper loading. What's more, the ribbon cannot be damaged by phantom power, electrical faults or bad cables.
