The history of Zildjian began with a discovery that was originally intended to turn metals into gold. In 1618, Avedis Zildjian I, an Armenian alchemist living in Constantinople, developed an alloy made from copper, tin and traces of silver.
The result did not yield the hoped-for gold, but produced remarkable acoustic properties. Five years later, the sultan bestowed upon him the name Zildjian, which literally means ‘cymbal maker’ in Armenian.
The secret of this alloy was then passed down through the generations. Even today, Zildjian still uses this family recipe, comprising 80 per cent copper, 20 per cent tin and traces of silver.
