Presentation
When looking for a left-handed bass, it’s important to find familiar features whilst retaining enough scope to develop your playing. The Ashdown The Saint Gloss Black LH features a classic 4-string design, with a scale length of 864 mm and 20 frets. Its poplar body helps ensure the instrument remains comfortable to play, whilst the double cutaway provides easy access to different areas of the neck, particularly when reaching for higher notes.
Above all, the Saint relies on a combination of two electric bass classics: a P-Bass pickup and a J-Bass pickup. The former generally provides that low-end foundation and presence that allow the bass to provide solid support for a band, whilst the latter offers greater definition and bite. Here, the two pickups are hand-wired and paired with passive electronics. With two volume controls and a master tone control, you can balance the pickups to your liking and switch from a thick sound to a more open and precise tone without getting lost in a multitude of controls.
The bolt-on neck and roasted maple fingerboard provide a distinctive feel under the fingers and give the Saint a rather distinctive look. The roasting process involves heating the wood to reduce its moisture content, which gives it that darker, warmer hue. The Vintage tuners and fixed bridge reinforce the instrument’s classic character, whilst the Gloss Black finish gives it a understated and elegant look. And as this version is specifically designed for left-handers, you benefit from a bass that’s designed the right way round from the start, supplied with a gig bag for easy transport.

The roasted maple used for the neck and fingerboard is immediately recognisable by its darker hue, which gives this Saint a different look to traditional maple. Roasting involves subjecting the wood to a heat treatment that reduces some of its moisture content and alters its properties. Ashdown has also fitted this bass with CTS-style potentiometers, a benchmark widely recognised in the world of electric instruments for their meticulous craftsmanship and precise operation. Whilst these details may go unnoticed in day-to-day use, they contribute to the build quality and identity of this Gloss Black LH version.
