The Hiwatt HI-5H guitar amp head, with its 5W, is a beast of a controller. At low volume, it remains crisp and clear. The clean sounds don't lose their power, and the overdrive comes in smoothly. It knows how to play small without being forgotten.
The EL84 and ECC83 tubes provide a good warmth. The tone is smooth and punchy. It's a bit like an old guitar that sounds at the center of the stage, with just the right nuances.
The 2-band EQ is simple and effective. Just turn it to adjust. There aren't tons of knobs, but the range is sufficient. The essentials, nothing superfluous!
The Clean/Overdrive toggle changes everything. In Clean mode, it's brilliant. Switch to Overdrive, and you have a grainy texture that instantly warms up the atmosphere. No bumps, just a smooth transition.
There's no loop effect, but you can easily add your own pedals. If you like simplicity, the amp handles its own natural sound. But pedals work well. Fuzz, delay, everything works without a hitch.
With its 5W output, it's very suitable for rehearsals or small gigs. Plus, the 3.5mm Aux input is a plus for playing along with your favorite tracks. It integrates well with the overall package.
If you're looking for reverb, you'll have to use a pedalboard. But without one, it retains a direct, raw feel. On stage, its compact size doesn't hinder its impact. It's clearly felt, without being overwhelming.
