Marcus Miller was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1959, into a very musical family. His father was an organist and choirmaster, which immersed him in gospel and jazz music from an early age. He began by learning the clarinet before turning to the electric bass in his teens. Strongly influenced by jazz and soul musicians, he quickly developed a precise, rhythmic style. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music, which enabled him to strengthen his theoretical foundations while already playing professionally on the New York scene.
