To find out more...
Marcus Miller learnt to play the clarinet at school at a very early age, before discovering the electric bass. His interest in wind instruments had a strong influence on the way he constructed his melodic lines. Unlike some bassists who focus solely on rhythm, he often thinks of his phrases like a saxophonist or singer. This approach explains why his lines remain so lilting and memorable. He continues to play bass clarinet on several albums and in concert. This instrument brings a deep, warm colour that considerably enriches his arrangements and allows him to explore more orchestral sound textures in his modern compositions.
