Moog synthesizers are probably the most famous electronic musical instruments of all time. Their designer, Robert A. Moog, was a doctoral student completing his thesis at Cornell University in the early 1960s, earning pocket money by selling a small number of custom-made Theremin instruments. He and a friend were already discussing the possibility of selling other types of electronic kits to hobbyists, when he came up with the idea of selling custom-made electronic synthesizers.

The synthesiser invented by Robert Moog in the 1960s triggered a veritable revolution in electronic music. The Beatles, Mick Jagger and Sun Ra were among the first to buy the famous Moog synthesiser. Moog went on to design dozens of instruments, including the Minimoog.
