The Paiste PST 5 Crash Medium 14" is part of the PST 5 series, recognised as the historic gateway to bronze cymbals since 2005. It uses the CuSn8 alloy, often referred to as "bronze 2002", which has left its mark on several generations of musicians for its clear, centred timbre.
This 14" version retains a brilliant sound colour, with a clean opening as soon as you strike it. Its medium weight means it reacts effortlessly while retaining a well-defined attack. The German manufacturing process ensures a notable consistency between each model, which helps when you want to find exactly the same feel from one stage to the next.
The 2014 revision by the Paiste team made it thinner, which brings a warmer sustain while preserving the typical brightness of the series. This reduction in thickness also makes the cymbal more flexible, giving a more pleasant bounce that's less tiring on the wrist.
The frequency mix is clean, with a mid-range spectrum that avoids muddled nuances when playing in a band. The crash develops a controlled wash that doesn't mask the other elements of the kit.
