An American drummer, composer and producer born in 1974, Nate Smith has established himself as one of the pillars of modern groove. Raised amidst the crossroads of 1970s rock, soul and pop, it was his late immersion in jazz that shaped the complexity of his playing. His career really took off in the late 1990s when the legendary singer Betty Carter spotted him, before he went on to become the rhythmic driving force behind Dave Holland’s quintet and saxophonist Chris Potter’s band.
Capable of co-writing a track for Michael Jackson, leading his own solo project Kinfolk or setting funk stages alight with the band The Fearless Flyers, Nate Smith defies labels. His trademark lies in his legendary ‘pocket’: a visceral, heavy and relentless groove, borrowed from hip-hop, which he fuses with the fluidity and asymmetrical time signatures of jazz. A leading figure in contemporary drumming, his unique style makes him the ultimate example of versatility and expressiveness.
