Art PRO Audio - SCL2
The SCL2 is a high-quality, flexible dynamic processor designed for ease of use and exceptional sound, from subtle, soft compression to hard limiting. Noise reduction is provided by a fast gate or a subtle expander. The Attack and Release functions allow you to define the general operating range and automatically adapt to the audio being processed.
Presentation
It offers two easy-to-use compression channels, plus an expansion/gate stage for taming low-level noise or spikes. An LED meter simultaneously displays gain reduction and output level. The user also has the option of using each of the two channels independently, as mono processors, or as a stereo pair in link mode, with all the controls on the left governing the behaviour of both channels.
The SCL2's analogue audio inputs and outputs are presented as balanced XLR and balanced 6.3mm jack sockets. There is also sidechain access via a TRS jack wired as an insert send/return loop. The inputs and outputs can handle signals up to +20dBu, while the frequency response is very wide, from 10Hz to 40kHz ±0.5dB.
The compressor section includes controls for threshold, ratio, attack, release and output level, but there is also a switch for hard or soft-knee operation. Hard bypass buttons are included for each channel, while the single-knob expander/gate section can be switched to expander or gate mode, with an LED at the end of the main screen indicating that the threshold for the selected section has been crossed. A fully variable compression threshold allows the compressor to switch between 1:1 (no compression) and hard limiting, with a 3:1 ratio at the mid-point of the control's travel. In soft-knee mode, the ratio control sets the maximum ratio that will be applied; the ratio gradually increases towards this value as the signal approaches the threshold.
While the attack and release controls allow the user to set the nominal operating range (attack 25-100ms; release 100ms to 3 seconds), there is a degree of automatic adjustment that fine-tunes the settings according to the dynamics of the input source. There is also a button located between the attack and release controls to activate automatic mode, which determines the time constants according to the incoming programme. This function is particularly useful for programmes whose dynamics are constantly changing.
