Presentation
The DS501 is a sophisticated two-channel noise gate with fully adjustable Peak Punch. It incorporates a number of features developed by Drawmer that are invaluable to the sound engineer and not found on other conventional noise gates.
Drawmer's DS501 Power Gate is an enhanced version of the industry-standard DS201. It features a new dual-mode Peak Punch processing section on each channel, which allows the transients in the noise gate signal to be shaped to boost specific frequencies in the audio spectrum. Frequency selection is variable from 75 Hz to 16 kHz, with an additional control to adjust the amount of processing. The 'Tuneable' mode is particularly suited to percussion gating applications, as it adds punch to frequencies that are missing from individual drum sounds, adding more definition and presence to the processed signal.
Noise gates are often difficult to set and adjust. For example, when trying to separate a signal from unwanted noise or crosstalk that is relatively loud, unexpected triggering by unwanted components of the sound can be a serious problem. Drawmer's solution to this problem is the inclusion of two variable filters, one high-pass and one low-pass, which act on the lateral detection circuit. This allows high-frequency residue from the drums or cymbals to be rejected and only the lower frequencies of the snare sound to trigger the noise barrier.
The DS501's fast attack time means that it can be opened in a matter of microseconds, preserving the natural attack of any processed sound. Full envelope controls allow the gain to be varied at a rate best suited to the material being processed. The DS501 is ideal for vocal processing applications or envelope shaping for samples.
Finally, each channel can be individually switched between gating and ducking modes for voice-over applications or the removal of clicks and pops. The DS501 can also be switched to accept a key input, allowing the noise barrier to be opened externally to a drum signal or other sound source for reverb applications.

Spotlight on
Drawmer is
a well-known brand in the PA and studio universe, specialised in signal
processing devices. You are looking for a Noise Gate that does not only cut the
sound, go for the MX40. This quadruple Noise Gate allows an automatic setting
of the attack time and offers the Peak Punch function that adds more impact to
drum and percussive sounds.
