The Gibson J-45 Standard Vintage Sunburst is an electro-acoustic folk guitar that is a living part of music history. Introduced in 1942 and affectionately nicknamed ‘The Workhorse’, it remains the most recorded and best-selling model in Gibson’s history. Even today, it continues to evolve whilst remaining true to its essence.

Its round-shouldered dreadnought body combines solid mahogany sides and back with a solid Sitka spruce top, delivering that signature warm, balanced and projecting tone that has characterised decades of recordings. The multi-ply binding on the top and the single-ply binding on the back emphasise the refinement of its high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

In terms of playability, the SlimTaper-profiled mahogany neck, fitted with a compound dovetail joint and glued using hot bone glue, ensures comfort and a rich, sustained tone. The rosewood fingerboard, inlaid with mother-of-pearl markers and featuring a 12-inch radius, ensures fluidity and precision across the entire 24.75-inch scale length.

The major innovation lies in its Baggs HiFi DNA electronics, exclusive to Gibson: two lightweight pickups mounted on the bridge plate, each paired with its own preamp, deliver natural amplification that remains true to the instrument’s acoustic character, with discreet volume and tone controls accessible from the soundhole.
