Presentation
The Hiwatt DR20/0.5 1x12 Fane Purpleback The Little Rig takes the DNA of the brand's great models in a compact format, without losing any of their sonic personality. The preamp circuit designed by David Reeve and the meticulous wiring by Harry Joyce, which made the reputation of the DR103 and DR504.
Here, the power stage is based on two EL84 tubes, providing a more accessible version of the Hiwatt sound, while retaining its characteristic dynamic range and width. The power selector offers a choice between 20 W and 0.5 W, so you can move effortlessly from live performance to playing at home.
This combo also features a 'Linked' input, inspired by Pete Cornish's modification for David Gilmour. It links the Normal and Brilliant channels directly, giving access to a richer spectrum and enhanced attack.
The sound becomes livelier and more biting, ideal for those who want to recapture the raw energy of a classic Hiwatt without resorting to external wiring. On the front panel, a Fat/Sparkle switch lets you colour the tone, boosting the bass or bringing more sparkle to the treble, depending on the musical context.
The choice of loudspeaker makes all the difference here. This DR20/0.5 embeds a 150W Fane Acoustics™ Purpleback 12", tailor-made for Hiwatt. With its high capacity, it remains perfectly clear even at high volume, while offering the reserve needed to handle the richest saturations. It is a key element of the amp's sonic character, guaranteeing both precision and fullness, whether in clean sound or overdrive.
The DR20/0.5 1x12 Purpleback is a gateway to the Hiwatt world of sound, designed for guitarists looking for a reliable platform for their pedals, faithful recording performance and powerful projection on stage. Compact and versatile, it bridges the gap between the brand's tradition and the needs of today's musicians.

To find out more...
Dave Reeves was a British engineer and the founder of Hiwatt, a famous brand of amplifiers for guitar and bass. After working for Sound City and Mullard, in the 1960s he created his own models, designed to be robust, reliable and deliver a clear sound even at high volume. His amps quickly won over legendary bands such as The Who, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, helping to define rock's famous "British sound". Although he died in 1981, his influence lives on and Hiwatt amplifiers are still built according to his principles.
