Active Loudspeaker

Featuring a 12-inch 2-way bass-reflex design and Class D amplification, the Mackie Thrash 212 V2 is designed to deliver powerful and precise sound. Its DSP offers four equalisation presets, whilst Bluetooth streaming makes it easy to play audio from a mobile device and also allows two speakers to be paired to extend the sound coverage. The automatic 12-band feedback suppressor adds a welcome control feature, whilst its robust build gives this active speaker the makings of a true stage beast.

This Mackie Trash 212 V2 powered speaker is suitable for music playback, vocals and event sound reinforcement, with Class D amplification delivering 650 W RMS and up to 1,300 W peak. Its frequency response of 45 Hz to 18 kHz covers a large part of the useful spectrum, delivering an energetic sound that retains clarity. The maximum SPL reaches 129 dB, with headroom suitable for sustained high-volume playback.

Wireless streaming via Bluetooth offers real flexibility for background music, soundtracks or audio content from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. The audio stream can remain active whilst a microphone is connected, which simplifies events where music and speech need to coexist without the need for multiple cables. This configuration is also suitable for vocal performances accompanied by musical content.

To adapt the sound to different contexts, Mackie has included DSP processing featuring four EQ presets accessible directly on the speaker. This approach allows you to quickly adjust the sound response according to the content being played, with a master volume control, a Mic/Line switch and a gain control to complete the signal management. All these controls are accessible via the control panel.

The system can also be expanded to a two-speaker configuration via Bluetooth pairing, with the option to use it in stereo or dual mono mode depending on the required coverage. The 90-degree horizontal and 60-degree vertical dispersion helps ensure sound distribution suited to spaces where sound needs to extend beyond the front axis. The wireless connection also reduces cabling between the two speakers.

The Trash 212 V2’s two-way system combines a 12-inch woofer with a 1-inch compression driver, with a crossover set at 2.0 kHz. The bass-reflex enclosure complements this acoustic design to effectively deliver the low-frequency range. The combination of the woofer and the compression driver thus ensures a balanced reproduction across the different regions of the audio spectrum.

The automatic feedback suppressor operates across 12 bands to detect and reduce frequencies likely to cause annoying whistling. A dedicated control activates this function, adding a useful layer of control for set-ups with microphones and making it easier to manage the system when the sound level rises. This function is equally suited to both rehearsals and live performances.

Remember to use cables that are suitable for the speaker’s connections, and long enough to allow for easy installation of the system without putting strain on the connectors or obstructing movement around the stage.

To complete the installation, a stable speaker stand allows you to position the speaker at a suitable height, thereby improving sound coverage and minimising obstacles between the audience and the speaker.

If you’re looking for more impact in the lower frequencies, add an amplified subwoofer: this boosts the bass whilst allowing the 12" speakers to focus more on the mid-range and treble.

Also remember to use a protective cover when the speaker is being stored or transported, as this reduces the risk of scratches, dust and minor knocks during repeated handling.

For stereo set-ups or larger systems, a second speaker paired with a small mixer allows you to split the audio sources between the different channels and quickly adjust the levels, equalisation and overall volume.
