Marcus Miller is also one of the few bassists to have fashioned a sound identity that is instantly recognisable from both the studio and the stage. Early on, he adopted a hybrid approach between acoustic jazz and modern production, incorporating subtle effects (chorus, envelope filter) without ever losing the clarity of the sound.
He is a very precise arranger: his compositions are often based on simple but extremely dynamic structures, in which each instrument has a narrative role. This 'cinematic' style of writing has enabled him to work on soundtracks and hybrid projects between jazz and film music.
His influence extends far beyond jazz: many funk, neo-soul and fusion bassists cite his touch as a benchmark for groove and musicality.
