To find out more...
Marcus Miller was born in Brooklyn into a musical family: his father was an organist and choirmaster, which exposed him to gospel and church music from an early age. He studied at New York's High School of Music and Art, where he honed his clarinet skills before taking up the electric bass.
Early in his career, he worked as a studio musician on the New York scene, recording in a wide variety of styles (jazz, pop, R&B). It was this versatility that attracted the attention of Miles Davis, with whom he collaborated decisively on Tutu, an album that marked a milestone in electric jazz.
He was also a key player in the modernisation of the R&B sound of the 1980s, particularly through his arrangements and production.
