Marcus Miller has always had a strong connection with traditional Afro-American music. Blues, gospel and soul have had a profound influence on his harmonic and rhythmic approach. Even in his most modern pieces, these roots remain perceptible. He sees this tradition as an essential basis of his musical identity. This historical awareness is also apparent in some of his projects relating to African and Afro-American cultural memory. For Miller, understanding the history of black music gives him a better grasp of the evolution of jazz, funk and R&B. This reflection gives particular depth to his international artistic and educational work.
