Presentation
OXI Coral Black: a wide range of synthesis options in a compact Eurorack module
The OXI Instruments Coral Black combines eight digital synthesis voices in a Eurorack format measuring just 14 HP. Its all-black finish sets it apart visually from the original Coral, whilst its sound architecture retains the polyphonic and multitimbral capabilities of the Coral family. It is aimed at electronic musicians, producers and modular system users who want a versatile sound source without having to devote a large part of their rack to several specialised modules.
The module can function as a classic polyphonic synthesiser or distribute its eight voices across several instrumental parts. This arrangement allows, for example, a bass, a pad and a melody line to be combined within a single patch, provided the available voices are allocated as required. Depending on the engine selected, a voice can utilise up to eight oscillators, amounting to up to 64 oscillators in compatible configurations.
The sound palette covers several synthesis families: virtual analogue, frequency modulation, wavetables, additive synthesis, waveform modelling, detuned oscillators, strings and percussion modelling. The WAV player also allows you to integrate your own samples. This diversity enables you to create classic timbres as well as explore complex textures, drones and rhythmic sounds.
With firmware 3.0, the library now comprises 27 sound engines. New additions include FMX7, inspired by the DX7’s FM synthesis, ACID 2, OB-VA, String 2, PianoZ and Stitcher. A maximum of ten engines can be loaded simultaneously in the custom firmware, allowing you to build a configuration tailored to a specific project rather than keeping all available engines loaded at once.
The Coral Black also features built-in reverb, chorus and delay, with per-voice adjustable sends. Its tone controls, filter, envelopes and modulation options allow you to fine-tune sounds without resorting to excessive external processing. The stereo audio outputs preserve spatialisation capabilities.
Control is via MIDI or CV/Gate, and MPE compatibility paves the way for expressive performances with a suitable controller. The Coral Black thus provides a comprehensive sound source for compact racks, with the aesthetic appeal of a black front panel and a scalable software architecture.
