Thermionic Culture Earlybird 2.3: the most versatile tube preamplifier on the market. It incorporates a unique Class A push-pull balanced circuit, offering extremely low noise and exceptional headroom (+33dBm). Its Sowter-optimised transformers guarantee minimal distortion (0.005% THD at 1kHz). Its versatility is unrivalled: it works as a mic preamp (creative 300Ω/1200Ω impedances), line preamp, or with the Pullet external passive EQ. The active EQ uses the award-winning 'Vari-slope' curves without degrading the signal thanks to its operation in the feedback loop. It's the ultimate tool for purist recording and professional tone shaping.

Presentation
Thermionic Culture's Earlybird 2.3 is designed to position itself at the top end of studio preamplifiers, offering technical features and flexibility that set it apart from the competition.
1. Circuit Innovation and Exceptional Audio Performance
The fundamental advantage of the Earlybird 2.3 lies in its internal design. It is a two-channel preamplifier using a symmetrical push-pull all-valve circuit. According to sources, this architecture is unique in this application. This choice of design, combined with Class A operation, results in state-of-the-art sonic performance:
- Low Noise and Minimal Distortion: The push-pull circuit ensures very low noise and minimal distortion. Total harmonic distortion (THD) is measured at just 0.005% at 1kHz. Total unweighted noise is 114dB below maximum output level (MOL).
- High headroom: The device has a significant headroom, with MOL reaching +33dBm (36V RMS). This level reserve is crucial for capturing transients without clipping.
- Optimised transformers : The input and output transformers have been specially optimised in collaboration with Brian Sowter. This targeted work results in greater headroom and reduced distortion, particularly at low frequencies, while minimising phase shift.
2. Unrivalled versatility and creative impedance control
The Earlybird 2.3 has been designed to be the most versatile device in the modern recording environment.
- Multiple Operating Modes: The Function switch allows selection of Mic input (300Ω or 1200Ω), Line input, or Pullet mode. The Line function is essential as it allows the Earlybird 2.3's tube sonics and EQ capabilities to be used during the mixing process on any mono or stereo signal.
- Pullet Partnership: Pullet mode configures the Earlybird 2.3 to provide the necessary gain boost to the Pullet passive EQ, creating a complete EQ chain of the highest quality, described as a "perfect companion to a superb mastering EQ".
- Impedance Tonal Adjustment: The switchable input impedance (300Ω or 1200Ω) is not just a technical setting, but a creative tonal adjustment tool. The 1200Ω setting is technical for Neumann FET microphones and gives a very open sound with an extended high end. The 300Ω setting is optimal for ribbon microphones (such as the Coles 4038) but can also be used to make a slightly more aggressive sound with a midrange 'punch'.
3. The Purist Character of Active EQ
The integrated Active Lift EQ represents a major competitive advantage, focused on preserving the purity of the signal:
- EQ in the negative feedback loop: Active EQ operates in the circuit's negative feedback loop. The educational advantage is that activating the EQ section (even flat) does not introduce additional gain stages into the signal path, eliminating the risk of unwanted artefacts or signal degradation often associated with series EQ circuits. This allows EQ to be added in a 'very purist' way.
- Award-winning 'Vari-slope' curves: Treble and bass controls use unique 'Vari-slope' curves. The award-winning treble curve provides a low plateau at low settings and boosts high frequencies up to a maximum peak of +20dB at 10kHz. The bass section can reach +17dB at 50Hz.
- Filter flexibility: In addition to the EQ, switchable high-pass filters (HPF) (40Hz, 100Hz, 800Hz) are available. The 800Hz position acts as a shelving filter that can be combined with the Bass Lift to create simultaneous midrange cut and bass boost.
The Thermionic Culture Earlybird 2.3 is designed not only for the transparency and low distortion of high-fidelity recording (thanks to its push-pull circuit and high headroom), but also to offer unique creative tools (purist Vari-slope EQ, tonal impedance adjustment) that conventional preamplifiers lack.
