October 1, 1987, after 100 years of existence, Nippon Gakki Ltd. changed its name to Yamaha Corporation Ltd. Thus it celebrated its 100 years of distribution of musical instruments and paid tribute to its founder, Torakusu Yamaha (April 20, 1851 - August 8, 1916).
Torakusu Yamaha, descendant of the Tokugawa family from the Kishu region (currently Wakayama prefecture), is the third son of astronomer Kounosuke Yamaha. After a childhood spent playing with the tools and instruments of his father he looks work Torakusu Yamaha is passionate about mechanics. Showing great dexterity, he pursued studies in Nagasaki watchmaker where he turned to medical applications and in 1884, begins to visit Hamamatsu to hospitals with a view to make necessary repairs on devices and medical equipment. In 1887 Yamaha Torakusu repairs his first organ in elementary school in Hamamatsu Jinjo (now Motoshiro elementary school); he decided to continue the repair activity and to engage in the manufacture of organs. It is October 12th, 1897 that creates Torakusu Yamaha Nippon Gakki Ltd. and became its first president
