On 1 October 1987, after 100 years in business, Nippon Gakki Ltd changed its name to Yamaha Corporation Ltd. In doing so, it celebrated 100 years of distributing musical instruments and paid tribute to its founder, Torakusu Yamaha (20 April 1851 - 8 August 1916).
Torakusu Yamaha, a descendant of the Tokugawa family from the Kishu region (now Wakayama prefecture), was the third son of the astronomer Kounosuke Yamaha. After a childhood spent playing with his father's tools and instruments and watching him work, Torakusu Yamaha developed a passion for mechanics. Showing great dexterity, he went on to study watchmaking in Nagasaki, where he turned his attention to medical applications and, in 1884, began visiting hospitals in Hamamatsu to carry out necessary repairs on medical apparatus and equipment. In 1887 Torakusu Yamaha repaired his first organ at Jinjo Elementary School in Hamamatsu (now Motoshiro Elementary School); he decided to continue repairing organs and start making them. On 12 October 1897, Torakusu Yamaha founded Nippon Gakki Ltd and became its first chairman.
