The Arturia KeyLab Essential 3 88 makes no secret of its ambition: to offer fluid, extensive and ergonomic control in a USB-MIDI format that's easy to integrate into any modern setup. Its 88 semi-weighted keys give you a real playing feel, without weighing down your workspace or your shoulders. On the front, an army of assignable controls - faders, pots, pads, buttons - answer the call, with a small backlit LED screen that saves you the hassle of flicking the mouse back and forth. You'll find all the essential functions like the transposer, arpeggiator and Scale and Chord modes. So many tools to help you avoid getting lost in the menus and keep your fingers where they belong: on the keyboard.
At the same time, Native Instruments' Komplete 15 Standard Upgrade bundle is a welcome addition to your sound library. If you already have a Komplete Select, this upgrade opens the door to more than 95 instruments and effects, with 50 expansions and a sound stock that would make a New York studio swoon. It's all controlled via Native Access and once installed, you can work offline, although you'll need a little patience to download everything.
Together, these two references form an effective and coherent duo, as much for the Sunday beatmaker as for the insomniac arranger. Whether you spend your days sampling obscure vinyl or composing video game soundtracks with ghostly pianos, you'll have plenty to do. And plenty to do again, should inspiration prove fickle.
