Drawmer - 1977 Channel-Strip
The Drawmer 1977 combines a preamp, a parametric equaliser, a compressor and analogue saturation in a single unit, allowing you to shape each take with great freedom. Its design allows for subtle or bold processing as required, without complicating the workflow. The unit places equal emphasis on precision and sonic character, with a design that ensures it remains comfortable to use during long recording sessions. Its backlit VU metre adds a distinctly vintage touch, almost enough to make an old tape recorder jealous.
Presentation
The 3-band parametric equaliser allows for precise adjustment of the frequency balance thanks to fully variable frequencies, a correction range of ±12 dB, a bandwidth control for the midrange, selectable slopes and a Peak mode dedicated to low frequencies. This architecture is equally suited to subtle corrections and more pronounced shaping when a take requires greater character. The signal path can also be reconfigured by placing the equaliser before or after the compressor, opening up a range of sonic approaches depending on the desired result.
The compression section applies a Soft-Knee curve to maintain a gradual response to level variations. The Threshold, Ratio, Attack and Release controls are complemented by a side-chain insert, as well as the BIG and AIR modes, which preserve low and high frequencies respectively during processing. Selectable harmonic saturation enriches the signal with Clean, Warm or Overdriven modes. The Mix control directly blends the processed signal with the original signal to achieve highly precise parallel compression via a single control.
Separate outputs for the preamp and the main channel facilitate particularly flexible routing within a modern studio. It becomes straightforward to record a completely neutral signal, a processed signal or several variants simultaneously, in order to retain various options during mixing. The large backlit analogue VU meter provides immediate visual monitoring of levels, with a useful +10 dB switch for when operating levels change as the project progresses.
The Direct switch also allows you to bypass the EQ, compression and saturation sections entirely, so you can rely solely on the preamp’s transparency when the source requires perfectly faithful reproduction. This versatility allows you to switch quickly from a fully coloured signal chain to a very neutral capture, without turning the front panel into a space shuttle control panel.

An electric guitar recorded via the instrument input can benefit from a touch of harmonic saturation to add depth, followed by targeted EQ to help it sit better within a dense mix. Changing the order of the equaliser and compressor also allows you to achieve noticeably different results depending on the desired sound.
Recordings of bass, drums or synthesisers can easily benefit from the variable high-pass filter, phase inversion and various saturation modes to precisely adjust the tonal character. The preamp’s direct output can also be set to a completely neutral setting, leaving more scope during the mixing or sound reworking stages.
