Founded in 1902 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gibson did not make its name solely on the strength of its electric guitars. Its history in acoustic guitars is particularly rich: as early as 1937, the brand launched the SJ-200, then known as the Super Jumbo, with a body measuring nearly 17 inches. Gibson also developed a distinct culture of decorative pickguards: the SJ-200 notably pioneered engraved designs, before the Dove and the Hummingbird carried on this tradition in 1960.

This aesthetic pursuit went hand in hand with constant technical evolution. Today, Gibson acoustic guitars are manufactured in Bozeman, Montana, whilst Kalamazoo remains closely linked to the brand’s history.
