The JBL Control 50S/T occupies a unique position within a subwoofer-satellite system: that of a bass unit placed against a wall in an entrance hall, foyer or conference room. Its capabilities include a continuous programme power rating of 300 W over 2 hours, coupled with a sustained output of 150 W of pink noise over the same period, and a long-term endurance rating of 200 W programme power over 100 hours or 100 W pink noise over 100 hours. The 600 W peak power handles peaks without flinching.

The 200 mm polypropylene cone driver features a 38 mm voice coil with four layers of copper-plated wire, mounted on a half-roll butyl rubber surround and a vented aluminium basket. This design delivers a frequency response of 32 Hz to 200 Hz (-10 dB), narrowed to 50–150 Hz within ±3 dB. Sensitivity reaches 95 dB at an angle and 89 dB at the centre of a wall, with a sound pressure level of 121 dB peak at an angle and 115 dB at the centre.

Two installation options are available thanks to the 8 Ω impedance in direct connection and the 70 V line transformer (80, 40, 20 or 10 W), a choice that covers both low-impedance coupling and a 2- or 4-satellite deployment on a 70 V/100 V line. Connectivity is provided via six lockable 2-pin connectors or a screw terminal block accepting cable up to 12 AWG.

The enclosure is constructed from structural plywood on the top, bottom and front, with MDF vent and terminal panels. A painted galvanised steel grille and 2.3 mm cold-rolled steel fittings protect the unit, available in white or black, providing omnidirectional coverage. The included wall bracket (depth 15 mm) comes complete with 4 M6 screws, a terminal cover, 6 connectors and an M6 screw for a safety sling. The speaker measures 391 x 356 x 203 mm and weighs 9 kg; the package weighs 10.2 kg.

JBL stands out for its highly structured approach to commercial audio installations. With the Control Contractor range, the brand does not simply offer individual speakers: it has developed a cohesive family of products designed for wall-mounted, recessed, suspended and distributed configurations.

This approach facilitates the design of systems combining different speakers whilst maintaining a consistent acoustic signature. JBL also emphasises installation flexibility, with models suited to speech, background music and more demanding musical applications.

The Control Contractor range thus benefits from several decades of development in the field of installed audio, with particular attention paid to architectural integration and the versatility of the systems.
