Larry Carlton really helped define the standard for Los Angeles studio musicians in the 1970s: perfect sight-reading, instant adaptation to styles, and the ability to deliver a workable take in very few attempts.
He was also one of Steely Dan's key guitarists, whose productions demanded extremely precise parts that were often rewritten until the "perfect take" was achieved, forging his legendary rigour.
His approach to sound was based on a simple but radical idea at the time: musicality takes precedence over technical demonstration, and this has had a lasting influence on jazz fusion and modern studio playing.
