Marcus Miller is also a major producer of modern jazz fusion. In the 1980s-1990s, he shaped the sound of several David Sanborn albums, including Backstreet and Voyeur, where his rhythmic approach became a recognisable signature. His playing is characterised by a fluid slap technique and a melodic use of the bass, almost like a lead voice.
At the same time, he developed a solo career marked by albums such as the Grammy-winning Renaissance. He is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, using music to promote cultural dialogue on a global scale.
