When an HDSPe AoX needs to go beyond its native network connections to communicate with MADI equipment, the AoX-MADI-EXT-BNC provides an extension that is directly suited to its architecture. This daughter card adds four BNC connectors dedicated to coaxial MADI inputs and outputs, thereby enabling an AoX configuration to be expanded without the need for an additional external MADI interface.

The HDSPe AoX is designed as a very high-density PCIe x4 interface, capable of handling up to 512 audio channels and combining network, AES3, MIDI and optional MADI connections on a single card. The AoX-MADI-EXT-BNC complements this suite by providing access to the MADI format over coaxial cable, which is particularly common in multi-channel digital audio infrastructures.

The benefit of this extension is particularly evident in systems where several devices need to exchange a large number of channels with a workstation. Multi-channel converters, digital mixing consoles, broadcast equipment and audio processors can thus be connected directly to the AoX interface via their MADI links. The HDSPe AoX can accommodate up to two optional MADI expansion cards, allowing for a total of up to four MADI ports depending on the chosen configuration.

The number of available channels varies depending on the sample rate used: the expansion supports up to 128 MADI channels at 48 kHz, 64 channels at 96 kHz and 32 channels at 192 kHz. These capabilities allow for a high density of inputs and outputs whilst working at high sample rates.

The AoX-MADI-EXT-BNC is also suitable for mobile set-ups when the HDSPe AoX is installed in a Thunderbolt expansion chassis, as well as in DAWs or integrated audio processors. Routing and mixing of the various audio streams are then handled by the HDSPe AoX ecosystem and its TotalMix engine, whilst the expansion module provides the physical connectivity required for coaxial MADI links.
