To upgrade an HDSPe AoX to an optical MADI architecture, the AoX-MADI-EXT-SFP provides a solution that is directly integrated onto the card. This expansion module features two slots for MADI SFP modules and also adds a BNC Word Clock connection. Multimode SFP modules are supplied with the expansion module, whilst a single-mode module can be added separately depending on the installation requirements.

This design allows the HDSPe AoX to be used with MADI equipment connected via fibre optics, a particularly useful configuration when the distances between the various elements in the audio chain make coaxial cabling less suitable. Multi-channel converters, digital mixing consoles, processing systems or broadcast infrastructure can thus be connected directly to the board via optical MADI links.

The expansion module retains the high channel density characteristic of the AoX architecture. Each MADI link can carry up to 128 channels at 48 kHz, 64 channels at 96 kHz or 32 channels at 192 kHz. As the HDSPe AoX can accommodate two optional MADI expansion cards, using two dual expansion cards provides an architecture with up to four MADI ports in total.

The choice of SFP also offers a degree of flexibility in terms of physical media. The multimode modules supplied with the expansion card are suitable for configurations designed for this type of fibre, whilst replacing them with a single-mode module allows the link to be adapted to a different optical infrastructure.

The inclusion of a Word Clock input via BNC completes this range of connections, allowing the extension to be integrated into a system where digital synchronisation relies on an external clock. The AoX-MADI-EXT-SFP thus becomes an interconnect component rather than a simple connection extension: it enables the HDSPe AoX to be integrated into larger optical MADI systems, whilst continuing to operate within a single PCIe interface.
