Preamps

The Shelford Channel from Rupert Neve Designs combines a class A transformer preamp, an inductor EQ and a diode bridge compressor in a single module. It offers a rich, modular sound signature, suitable for all stages of audio processing.

With the Shelford Channel, Rupert Neve Designs is offering more than just a modern console slice. This module represents a direct synthesis of over fifty years of analogue design, taking the foundations of the historic modules and adapting them to today's studio requirements.

Right from the input, the Class A mic preamp relies on a transformer specially designed to provide gain. This approach, absent from Rupert Neve's designs for several decades, restores the transformer to its rightful place in the construction of sound. The result is immediately apparent, with a marked density in the midrange, a solid base in the bass and a natural presence that imposes itself effortlessly in a mix.

The instrument input, derived from the famous RNDI topology, retains the same high standards of quality, while providing a high level of precision, particularly with high-impedance sources. It allows instruments to be processed directly with stable, detailed results.

The inductor equaliser extends this sonic approach by combining several inspirations from the brand's iconic models. The bass section adds substance and weight, with the option of switching between shelving and peak behaviour. The midrange is particularly effective, allowing you to position a source accurately, while the high frequencies offer clarity without harshness, thanks to a hybrid design combining vintage and modern circuits.

The dynamics section is based on a diode bridge compressor, capable of adding character while remaining controllable. It doesn't just reduce dynamics, it modifies the texture of the signal, adding density and a feeling of proximity that works particularly well on vocals, guitars or drums.

The Silk circuit completes the package by adjusting the harmonic content of the output. RED mode accentuates high frequencies and adds air, while BLUE mode reinforces bass and low midrange. Combined with the Texture control, it's possible to go from a very clean sound to more pronounced saturation, without ever losing the coherence of the signal.
