Hifi Cartridge

The renowned SPU 124 phono cartridge offers an exceptional listening experience thanks to its precise, balanced and dynamic sound reproduction. This cell has been specially designed to work in perfect harmony with Thorens' top-of-the-range turntables, in particular the TD 124 DD model. It is equipped with a brand new generator that provides an output voltage of 0.5 mV, reducing the need for additional signal amplification and minimising unwanted interference. What's more, it's equipped with a meticulously polished, bare elliptical diamond, whose mass has been reduced, ensuring precise, clear and detailed sound reproduction. This cell is an essential choice for demanding audiophiles looking for highly faithful sound reproduction.

The one-piece chassis of the SPU 124 is made from a highly insulating material, specifically designed to eliminate unwanted vibrations.

The diamond is mounted on an aluminium cantilever.
The coil is 99.9999% (6N) pure OFC copper, while the internal wiring is 99.9999% (6N) pure silver with gold-plated connectors.

The SPU 124 is manufactured using laser technology to ensure maximum machining precision.

In 1958, engineer Robert Gudmandsen created Ortofon's first SPU cell. This cell was designed to reproduce the stereophonic recordings that were becoming increasingly widespread at the time.
The term SPU, which stands for Stereo Pick-Up, perfectly illustrates this intention.

The engineer developed the cell drawing on the company's expertise and ten years of research into high-precision windings.

The body of the cell has a unique feature: it incorporates a cell holder that allows it to be attached to a pick-up arm using the SME mount.

To ensure optimum vibration reduction, the phono cell body is made of wood and resin. This design gives the SPU a distinctive sound, with rich lows and transparent highs for realistic reproduction.

The SPU's success and performance have quickly won it over both home users and professionals.
It has become a benchmark for discerning music lovers.

The collaboration with the famous turntable brand Thorens gave birth to the SPU 124, which inherits this emblematic design and benefits from the joint expertise of these two great names in the world of vinyl.
