Ableton Live 12 Suite: The Major New Features
1. Revolutionary MIDI and Idea Generation Tools
This is one of the areas where Live 12 shines brightest, with tools designed to stimulate creativity and generate new MIDI ideas:
- MIDI Transformations: These tools let you manipulate MIDI clips non-destructively. You can add embellishments, speed up or slow down passages, create articulation curves, connect consecutive notes and chords, and much more. It's a powerful way to experiment and transform your ideas.
- MIDI Generators: These new devices create MIDI sequences and patterns from scratch. They can be used to generate rhythms, melodies, harmonies or bass lines, providing an infinite starting point for your compositions.
- Tunings: Live 12 introduces support for alternative (microtonal) tuning systems. You can work outside the standard tempered scale and explore new musical sounds with compatible Live and Max for Live instruments.
- Keyboard and Scales: The piano roll has been enhanced with scaling tools to better view and edit notes within specific scales, making harmonic composition more intuitive.

2. New Instruments and Effects
Live 12 enriches its sound library with new textures and processing tools:
- Meld: A dual-timbral, dual-motor synthesizer capable of creating rich, textured sounds, from abstract textures to deep soundscapes.
- Roar : A multi-stage, adaptive saturation and distortion effect. It can be a simple saturator or a complex distortion beast with multiple modes, an EQ and a built-in compressor.
- Granulator III: The latest version of Robert Henke's popular granular synthesizer (Max for Live), offering new features and an improved interface for sound creation based on audio fragments.
- Performance Pack (Max for Live): A collection of performance-oriented Max for Live effects and instruments.

3. Workflow and User Interface Improvements
A number of adjustments have made Live 12 more pleasant and efficient to use:

- Navigation and Organisation:
- Stack View: Allows you to display several detailed tracks simultaneously and vertically (the piano roll of several MIDI tracks, or the waveforms of several audio tracks), making it easier to compare and edit.
- Hide Tracks and Scenes: You can hide unused tracks and scenes to simplify your view and focus on the essentials.
- Improved Browser: Faster, smarter searching, with improved tags and search history.
- Mixer in Arrangement View: The mixer is now available and always visible in the Arrangement View, eliminating the need to switch back and forth between views.
- Control layout: Device controls (macros, settings) can now be organised in tabs for better organisation and quicker access.
- Visual Design: A few visual tweaks for a cleaner, more modern interface.

4. Performance and Accessibility Improvements
- Accessibility: Live 12 focuses on accessibility, with improvements for screen readers and keyboard navigation.
- Performance and Stability: Under-the-hood optimisations for better overall performance and increased stability.

5. More Sounds and Packs
Live 12 Suite comes with an extensive sound library, including new packs and drum kits, melodic instruments and additional textures to inspire new creations.

Ableton Live 12 Suite is a major update that focuses on idea generation, sound experimentation, and a significant improvement in workflow fluidity. It's an even more powerful tool for musicians and producers looking to push the boundaries of their creativity.

Spotlight on

Founded in 1999 by two German techno musicians, Ableton has managed to grow to an international level with a single sequencer/recorder software: Live, released in 2001.
Among its many features, Live allows musicians to easily store and trigger samples during their performances, so that the audience can watch them build songs in real time. This game-changing software made it easier for "enlightened amateurs" to make music and use their computers as instruments, as well as to play live without needing to know how to program their own software.
