Electric Guitar Effects
The ZEQD-Pre preamp pedal, developed by the teams at EarthQuaker Devices and Dr. Z Amplification, offers a warm energy thanks to its tube analogue preamp that transforms the way you feel every nuance under your fingers. This compact format glides over a pedalboard with surprising ease and brings a reactive colour that could appeal as much to lovers of deep sounds as to explorers of lively textures. This pedal creates a direct link between your playing and a natural dynamic that enhances harmonics without saturating your sound space.

Presentation
The ZEQD-Pre EarthQuaker Devices adds a clear harmonic structure thanks to its analogue circuit that reacts immediately to the way you play. You benefit from a preamp that reproduces every attack with a lively grain capable of bringing expressive personality to the slightest hand movement.
With its passive 3-band EQ, it gives you fine control over frequency balance so you can adjust your tonal colour to suit your mood or your gear. Each setting will influence the overall texture to produce a coherent sound that adapts naturally to your playing.
EarthQuaker Devices has incorporated a complete analogue circuit to preserve a pure signal without digital intervention. This configuration stabilises the response and creates a direct feel under the fingers, helping you to maintain a coherent sound even if your setup includes several complex sources or effects.
At the end of the chain, the ZEQD-Pre can enrich the behaviour of your other pedals by adding a subtle warmth that gives the mid-range frequencies more scope. This placement improves the perception of dynamics when you vary the strength of your attack. The result is a natural articulation that makes your nuances more legible on an amp or in a hybrid configuration.
It features an analogue cabinet simulation designed for silent rehearsals without sacrificing the feel of an amp. You'll benefit from a coherent sound image that will help you concentrate on your phrases rather than the general volume around you.
Thanks to its XLR output, the ZEQD-Pre offers you a stable connection to a console or audio interface while retaining the character of the EF86 tube. Its ability to bypass cabinet simulation further extends the possible uses, as you can inject a more neutral signal into software or an IR loader to manage the final colour as you prefer.
Its Boost mode allows you to switch instantly from a sculpted voice to a broader thrust that brings out the higher harmonics. This rapid change creates a smooth transition between two sonic atmospheres without the need to modify the main EQ already set for your playing.

Who does what on the DQZ-Pre?
- Boost: Used to adjust the volume when Boost mode is activated and equalisation is deactivated. The level can become very high, so be careful, especially with headphones or via the XLR output.
- Level: Adjusts the output volume when the tone controls are active.
- Bass: Adjusts low frequencies from 20 Hz to 400 Hz.
- Middle: Adjusts the mid-range frequencies between 400 Hz and 2 kHz.
- Treble: Adjusts treble frequencies from 2 kHz to 20 kHz.
- Boost Footswitch: This footswitch deactivates the tone controls and applies a broadband boost without modifying the frequency response. It only works if the Activate footswitch is engaged.
- Activate Footswitch: Used to activate or bypass the ZEQD-Pre.
- Cab Sim Bypass Switch: Used to deactivate analogue cab simulation on the XLR output.
- Ground Lift Switch: Isolates the ground on the XLR output to eliminate ground loops.
- Direct Output: Balanced XLR output located on the left-hand side of the pedal.
- Headphone Output: The TRS 6.35 mm stereo headphone output is located on the left-hand side. The Level controls the headphone volume when the pedal is active. The output provides a unity-gain signal with cabinet simulation, even when bypassed.
